According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Netherlands U21 international Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.

The 22-year-old signed for the Bundesliga outfit in 2021 and he was an integral player for them during the 2022/23 campaign.

Van de Ven played 36 times across all competitions. Most of his appearances came at centre-back but he is also capable of playing at left-back.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Liverpool are ‘considering centre-back targets’ and ‘they would recruit a young, dynamic defender this summer who is capable of providing high-calibre back-up’.

Van de Ven has emerged as Liverpool’s main target in this position. Man City have also been linked with him but he has reportedly already said ‘yes’ to joining Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Wolfsburg have reportedly slapped a €30m asking price on their defender, and the race to sign him is ramping up ahead of next season.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Tottenham have ‘included’ Van de Ven ‘on their shortlist’ of potential centre-back targets, while Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba is also well-liked by the Premier League club.

Football Insider are meanwhile reporting that Liverpool are ‘prepared to battle’ Tottenham for Van de Ven. They add.

‘The Reds are in the market for a new centre-back and have identified the 22-year-old as a key target ahead of the 2023/24 season.

‘It is understood that Liverpool have begun laying the groundwork for a defensive signing this summer, with Jurgen Klopp eager to bolster his backline.

‘Klopp’s ideal profile for a defensive signing this summer is a versatile operator who can play in an orthodox back four as well as in a back three to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to assume his new-found role in midfield.

‘Liverpool’s recruitment team believe Van de Ven is capable of filling such a role in Klopp’s system and will look to compete with Tottenham for his signature.’

Earlier this month, Van de Ven revealed that he knows Liverpool have been “following him”.

“Of course, there are a lot of people who draw lines. It’s true that the director [Schmadtke] went there and I know that Liverpool followed me before. But at the moment I don’t know anything,” Van de Ven told Voetbal International.

“Do I think Liverpool is a nice club? Naturally!”

Van De Ven added: “If a nice club comes along that has a clear plan with me, then I could consider taking a step.

“Then you are open to that in that sense. There is a chance that after this summer I will just play in the Bundesliga, but there is also a chance that I will make a transfer. We will see. Let’s finish this season first.”
